The 2023 Wyss Film Festival
It's hard to believe that I've been keeping track of all the new movies I've watched for 13 consecutive years. The 2023 Wyss Film Festival, however, was tied for the lowest film total in the 13-year history. I was on a bit of an upward trend since 2018, thanks to those couple years of lockdowns, but last year saw a lot of personal change and tumult that threw my routines out of whack. Even so, I was still able to watch 167 different movies over the course of the year. Frankly, it's a dedication to the craft of sitting, shutting off your brain, and allowing yourself to be transported. Living in Marshfield now, I'm a new member of the South Central Wisconsin Library System (spanning from Wood and Portage Counties in the North to Dane and Green Counties in the South), which has given me access to new collections of DVDs. Yes, I still use DVDs. I'm also getting closer to knocking off every film ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Over the last 13 years, I've seen 574 of the 591 nominees (97%). Only 17 to go! Rest assured, I have already begun the 2024 Wyss Film Festival.
