The 2013 Wyss Film Festival
If you've followed any of my previous "film festival" notes, you may have noticed that I'm a bit of a cinephile. In the last two years combined (2011 and 2012), I watched about 28.8 days worth of movies. In hindsight, it was a ridiculous amount of time, but it also took a great deal of time management to accomplish that. Frankly, this year's festival was a bit of a disappointment compared to previous years. 2013 featured 27 less films than 2012, and the overall quality of the selections was down. Between having a child, getting a new job and moving twice, there were far less opportunities to curl up on the couch with Jayme and a good film. When I did watch something, it was often movies on television by myself while working on other stuff. More often than not, they were subpar and served only as background noise while I was finishing graphic design work, feeding Baya or doing laundry. Some weren't even worth watching all the way through. Nonetheless, 235 films made the list this year. And that was all without spending a cent thanks to the ol' boob tube and the libraries of Marathon County and Three Lakes. Even though most of these movies were not the focus of my attention at the time, I don't regret one second that I actually did spend snuggled up on the couch with my wonderful wife, Jayme. With all the great filmmaking in the world today, it's definitely something I'm going to continue for at least another year, watching as many movies as I can. We'll see how it goes.
